The future is afloat

The world’s first floating offshore wind farm relies relies on Eltek's Rectiverter UPS systems for stable operations, making sure lightning and communication equipment never fails.

The ocean covers around 70% of the world’s surface and is an under-utilised resource for energy and economic growth. Close to 80% of the resource potential is in deep waters. That’s ideal for Hywind, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, developed by Equinor.

Rectiverter for mission critical operations

Powering 20.000 households, the 30MW Hywind wind farm is supported by Eltek's Rectiverter UPS systems installed by Equinor partner Siemens. The UPS systems supplies power for the emergency lighting, instrument lighting, obstruction lighting and communication equipment.

"Eltek delivers high quality products with excellent service and therefore fits well with Siemens solutions. Products delivered from Eltek have been essential to fulfill the project needs," said Eirik Foss Harstad, Siemens, at the launch of the project. "In a tough market situation, Siemens strives to be a market leader when it comes to quality, solutions and service. Eltek delivers high quality products with excellent service and therefore fits well with Siemens solutions."

From vision to reality

A few years ago, floating offshore wind was a distant dream symbolised by a solitary small-scale Hywind turbine offshore Norway. Today, it is the most viable and mature solution, ready for market. With Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating wind farm, the vast potential of floating offshore wind is unlocked. In an unforgiving environment, the technical equipment must stand the test of the elements, and Eltek has proven its worth.

Worldwide, there is a great opportunity for using Rectiverters in offshore applications, especially when available space is limited.

Low cost of ownership, low maintenance

With very high MTBF, the requirement for spares in a Rectiverter system is limited, making it extra suitable for those hard-to-reach locations. And at 258 meter above sea level  - in the middle of the ocean is definitively a place you want to keep the service visits at a minimum.

"Worldwide, there is a great opportunity for using Rectiverters in offshore applications, especially when available space is limited and reduced total cost of ownership compared to standard UPS is required." explains Lars Dousa, Eltek, VP Industrial.

Eltek is looking forward to the continued development in this field, ready to play our part in harvesting the energy potential of deep water floating windfarms.

The world’s first bidirectional, power conversion module

The Rectiverter is a new concept in power conversion. It combines the functionality of a rectifier, an inverter and a static transfer switch in one bidirectional power module. This opens up for a new power flow architecture and a new way of designing power systems, meeting the needs for both AC and DC output, in one modular system.
